I've seen in some book or other a lovely chart that shows how much a baby should eat in a feeding based on his weight. Anyone know where to find something like that online?

We have an 1 pound 8 week old baby -- how much should he eat? And how much should he eat as he grows?

Er, that should be 10 lbs, 8 weeks. Obviously not 1 lb.

1 lb at 8 weeks old...somthing isn't right about that....this sounds like a troll question to me...

But if you just got your question worded wrong...A 8 week old baby should be fed on demand. And a breastfed baby eats more than a formula fed baby. So probably about every 1 1/2 - 2 hours. And don't forget to alternate breasts to reduce chances of engorgement...

My son was a formula fed baby but he was a very hungry baby. At 8 weeks he had doubled his birth weight. He was 6 lbs 1 oz at birth and at his 8 week check up he was already 12 lbs 3 oz and he was eating 4-6 oz every 4 hours.

One aspect that makes breastfeeding easy is that you don't need to worry about how much your baby is eating. As long as you breastfeed on cue (when your baby acts hungry, whether it's been 20 minutes or 3 hours), let your baby nurse on one breast until he decides to stop, and then offer the second breast if he's interested, your baby will get just enough for him. If your baby needs a bottle of your milk because you'll be away for a feeding or two, you can expect that he'll need about 2-4 ounces every 2-3 hours.

A fascinating part of breastfeeding is that your baby will need about the same amount of milk (around 28 ounces every 24 hours) from the time your milk comes in when he was about 1 week old until he starts solid foods at around 6 months old. Once he starts solids, he'll start taking less of your milk.

Breastfed babies actually need less volume than formula-fed babies, and the amount they need per day doesn't increase as they grow older. That's because breastmilk is so highly digestible; there's less waste, so less is needed. And the composition of your milk changes as your baby gets older to provide just the right balance of fats, protein, and carbohydrates.

I have a 5 week old little guy, he's 8lb 12oz now (he was 4 1/2 weeks early). The doc told me he should gain about 1oz per day. He should eat every 2-3 hours during the day and go no longer than 5 hours at night. He also said if its been 2 hours he should eat 2 ounces, 3 hrs 3 ounces, 4 hrs 4 ounces. Sometimes I pump and give it to him in a bottle so I can see how much he eats. good luck

Do you mean you have an 8lb 1wk old?

He should be allowed to eat as much as he wants, it is very common for breastfed babies to want a feed every 2hours so dont be alarmed if this is happening but dont let him go longer than 4hours between feeds. Just get him weighed once a week at a clinic or ask your health visitor to come round and do it for you and just keep an eye on his weight, as long as he is putting weight on then he is doing good. Also; another thing to bear in mind is abreastfed baby only puts on between 2-4oz in a week on average so dont worry if he doesnt put on more. Afeed should last at least 15-20mins too just to make sure he is getting plenty of hind milk and not just the fore milk, you should offer both breasts at a feed too.

good luck and congratulations!

feed him for at least 15 minutes on each brest every 2-4 hours, if he seems to want more, be sure to feed him every two hours on both breasts. do not supplemment unless you take him to the dr. and he is not gaining, because everytime you supplement your milk supply will go down, unless you pump.

you can weigh yourself holding him, then feed him on both sides, and weigh yourself again. that should tell you how much he is eating.

A breastfed baby this age should be nursed as often as he wants, for as long as he wants. As long as he's gaining weight and peeing/pooping normally, he's getting enough.
