Started with a rice burner. Crazy not to. Started my H-D with a Sporty. (Avatar pic) Now I have an FXDWG. (On my 360 page.) I'm almost 50 now, and the recliner like comfort of the big pig, all decked out with nerf bars and hiway pegs is much easier on the back and legs for long trips.
I never had a pony tail. Flat top haircut for years. Got a few tat's, but you can't see 'em unless I wear my "A" shirt. Take a peek at my FXDWG (The Dyna Wide Glide that you mentioned.) on my 360 page, or I can send you a pic via e-mail.
She's a bit heavy in the parking lots, but with the TC-88 she don't feel heavy at all when she is moving. The Dyna is a good choice since you can keep it stripped, or load on the goodies. I have nerfs, hiway pegs, a puss-screen, etc. Have the S & E carb, and the SE II pipes. Just recently had SE cams put in since the old ones went west. Not cheap, but this puppy is a fast bugger now, even with all the stuff hung off her. A hog is what you make of it, a *** bike is a *** bike. Buy American! (I own a Buick, also.)
And progressive shocks. I sit about 2 inches lower than stock. And I have the tool to adjust them. Soft-tail is OK if you don't have to worry about what you carry on the back and have a good foot plant with the stock seat and shocks.
Just for the heck of it, check out my Dyna pic on my 360 page, or I can send you it. Until you get old and do the garbage barge thing, the FXDWG is the way to go. Take care, ride safe. Ciao!
And just for the heck of it, I'm over 6 foot tall. I miss my kick-start on the cold days since I like to use a thick oil. Don't kill the battery, them puppies are not cheap anymore! Wear out the leg. It heals. (Unless the booger sends you over the bars!)

The real question is what are you looking for in a bike? The sportiness and flickability of a crotch roket or the laid back cruisiness of the Harley .
Two different bikes, two different styles of riding and two different ballgames financially.
Decide what you want the bike for, how often you will ride it and what you can afford

Harleys Rock! (Hondas roll.)
Go for it, bud. Get down to Spencer's Gift Shop and get you a pony tail hat, (or a clip-on if you wear a helmet) and some temporary tattoos. Then get yourself down to the Dealership for and expandable vest with lots of logos. Throw that Lite Beer way. Eat BBQ and lots of it and chase it down with a man's beer. Go with a Wide Glide, you'll grow into it.

I've been riding HOGs for a long time. Started with an Ironhead sporty, and I learned never to drive it further than I wanted to push it back. Hated the damn kickstart. ent to EVO sporty, Lowrider, springer and now a Heritage Classic. Harleys are not for everyone, only the few, the proud.... you know the routine.

take a look at the new Fat Bob. Reasonably priced (for a Harley) looks cool and still handles well. According to American Rider Magazine, it's the best handling big twin Harley's got out right now.

My idea is "Try it, you might like it."
How much you weigh and how much hair you don't have don't matter.
I can't put the weight on, and the hair came before the Harley(as if it matters).
I ride a Superglide.

Perhaps a Buell is what the doctor ordered, H-D engine and sound, sporty ride and looks. This may make your transition easy. Don't buy a cheap imitation H-D if your going whole hog (no pun intended). *** rip-offs maybe reliable but I think they are lame I call them farleys, short for fake Harleys.

If you are used to the performance of a crotch rocket, you might be disappointed in a Harley.
They are not bad, but they do not handle as well, and they have low power to weight.
You want a road warrior? Try out a Honda Valkerie, those things MOVE! My Brother has one, it is AWESOME! It has the same 6 cylinder engine as a Gold Wing, just a lot less stuff on it.
Anyway, you should at least test ride a few Harleys before you buy one, for the reasons I mentioned above.
