I am pretty much a noob and want to get into high-end gaming. i got Unreal-Tournament III for a present and it runs slow as crap on my computer. i thought getting geforce 8600gt would be a good idea since its one of the best graphic cards out there. the only problem is that i dont know if i can just install it on my computer and expect it to work or if i need to upgrade other hardware on my computer. Right now it says im running windows vista home basic, AMD anthlon 64 X2 Dual core processor 3600+, 896 MB ram and nvidia geforce 6150E. please help
Thanks

I am a little bit confused. If I am not mistaken the 6150E is a motherboard with a geforce chip set. I could be wrong about this and I assure you there will be those that will say so if I am wrong. Also there are so many video card part numbers out there today it is enough to make a persons head spin. Anyway, my guess is you might be running a built into your motherboard video and that is why you think your video card is a 6150. If that is the case then by all means the 8600gt will give your computer a major shot in the arm. Do yourself another favor and upgrade your systems RAM. Just go out and get 2 gigs (newegg.com) of ram and get rid of what you have in there now. 896 megs of RAM means you have a mishmash of Ram sticks. Adding 2 gigs in 1 gig pairs you will do wonders for your computer and its gaming ability. These newest and very demanding computer games require a lot of computer system RAM as well. From what I understand UT3 is very demanding and is a next generation game. Last, please look into a power supply. If you did not make your computer, which I am guessing you did not, then you bought like a Dell or HP or something like that. Those companies will try to give you the bare minum in power supplies and I can almost assure you that if your video was built into your motherboard then you do not have enough power for an 8600.

8600GT is a pretty decent card that would be a significant upgrade to your slow integrated graphics. It only draws about 30 watts, so a 300 - 350 watt power supply with 15 amps or more on the +12V rail could handle it. Once you plug in the card, motherboard BIOS will disable the onboard 6150. Be sure to load the driver of the 8600GT.

Consider increasing RAM to 2Gb to improve overall PC performance.

The 6150 is an onboard chipset, so you should be able to install an 8600GT as long as your power supply can provide enough power for it. Some of those cards will work with a 300W PS, while others will require a 350W or 400W - it depends on the brand.

sure your board has a pci express slot in run with a new card. but do not waste you money on a 8600, jump off the roof and get the 8800gt, about 300 dollars and 10x more powerful.
the 8600 is crap. and grab two gigs of ram. memory is cheap now you can grap two gigs from newegg for less than 75 dollars.

Not only that nVidia supports DirectX 10, but also Vista. The next step up is a nVidia 8800, but be ready to dish out the bucks. I hope ATI catches up, but in the meantime, it's nVidia.
