Interesting question!

Huckabee is the candidate of the Religious Right. He's been able to carve out a niche for himself in this area because the other major candidates are not really favored by the Christian right.

I think the Christians who voted for Reagan and both Bushes are beginning to feel the party has abandoned them. Abortion has become almost a dead issue. Prayer in schools is hardly ever mentioned in politics anymore. The attempt to get schools to teach creationism has gone away. Mainstream Republican candidates don't even like to talk about these issues today, and when someone asks them a direct question they waffle.

This has made a place for Huckabee. Unrepentant creationist, still talks about abortion, etc. etc. Maybe this is why he's doing so well despite not spending the most money. I mean look what he's up against--Giuliani the closet liberal and Romney, a Mormon.

So if he gets the nomination, who should he pick as running mate? If he picks another fundamentalist Christian, it will galvanize his base but also the opposition. It will polarize even the Republican Party! If he picks a moderate, then he stands the chance of losing his base.

My guess is that he would pick someone nobody ever heard of. A lesser-known congressman of ex-governor or someone like that. Someone who doesn't have a big record, who can be made to look like all things to all people, who moderates will think is moderate and hard-liners will think is hard-line. That won't be easy!

If Huckabee gets the nomination I'm voting for the Democrats.
He'll probably pick some other wacky creationist.

Giuliani is a likely choice. If not Giuliani, he'll probably go for a member of the Senate such as Voinovich (OH) or Kyl (Az).

One of the 3 major candidates; romney is a definite big contender for that running mate position, and giuliani and mccain. he might not go for either and go with someone like thompson.

McCain would be the best choice he could make. It would give him support with moderates without sacrificing his conservative values.
