They used rags, some of them made from cotton. Pads didn't come in to the picture til around World War I.

my grandma said people always used to say "i'm on the rag" or something like that when they were on their period, so it's like a lot of cloths together to absorb

from my past research they used clothes that had to be washed or just stayed in bed bleeding for the week...gross eh?

i think they mustve used some soft leaves or soem natural cotton or cloth that couldve been washed or thrown out.
