Hi
I have high speed internet on my desktop last night I wanted to sit on the sofa and surf the web so I unplugged the ethernet cord from the desktop and plugged it into my laptop. but low and behold it said it can not display the page. What ? Why?
I called charter and the guy offered me a networking package for another 50.00hook up fee and 9.99 a month but I dont want to network them I just wanted to surf sitting on my sofa. Why cant i just unplug the ethernet cord from the desktop and run it to my laptop for internet connectivity? I dont know a heck of a lot about this so please be gentle. Should I have told them I bought a new laptop and wanted to use it but when i hooked it up it said can not connect?GZZZZ

ok no theinstaller didnt leave a disk but yes he did install some software. Im not sure why he didnt leave it I have a router. And I just hooked all the cords up to the desktop and laptop but it still says the page can not be displayed so Im going to assume at this point the only thing I can do is ask charter foe the software?

If you do have a router then your IP should start something like 192.168.x.x (x is any number between 0 and 254). To check your IP go to START->RUN->Type in CMD->Type in IPCONFIG, this will give you your IP address.
On your laptop make sure you are set to DHCP:
START->CONTROL PANEL->Network Connections, Local Area Connection (right click this), properties, in the window find TCP/IP (double click this). It should be set for Obtain IP automatically.

I don't have Charter, but I'm guessing there is some kind of software installed on your desktop that allows it to sign in to your service with a password (it might be permanently signed in, or it might do it automatically.) And your laptop doesn't have this software.

Well, you should have some soda of disk that you or the guy installed, when you were sbscribing for internet. Put a disk in your labtop, install. Shut Down. Put a cable in. Log on. And try to get on IE.
