Shut up, is not a "bad word" in the sense of the other vocabulary some people tend to say. However, it is sometimes taken offensive and can be rude. Most people may not take it in the bad sense, but some just tend to. Depending on your grade or school, most teachers will take it inappropriate. In result of this, I recommend that you do not say it in school. Though if someone tells you to shut up..these are some responses:

1. How dare you Up Shut me.
2. I prefer, "be quiet."
3. Shut doesn't go up, prices do. So take your OWN advice instead of telling me.

I think people just don't like the way it's being said. Kind of like the word 'crap'. It's not a bad word either but when you hear a 5 year old saying OH CRAP..then it sounds a little different than an adult saying it. Although, 'be quiet' is a nicer term for shut up.

It isn't a "bad word" and it certainly isn't a swear word, but it is pretty rude. There are nicer ways to ask a person to be quiet.
I prefer not to use it and I Never use it with children or teens.
If someone in the class is offended, it's no skin off your nose to be nice and not say it, right? :)

Of course, there is a slang phrase "shut up!" which means "No Way!", "You can't be serious!" etc. In which case I would think that is certainly not offensive.

It's not a swear no, but it is very mean and aggressive and basically think about it: You are telling someone to shut up instead of please be quiet which at least sounds nicer. Sayings shut up is saying your no one cares about what you have to say and it says it in a mean way. Here's an example : Go way or F off! See the difference. It's all in what you say & how you say it. Take Care!!

It's not a "bad word" in the sense that the f-bomb is a bad word. But it's a rude word, and well-mannered people don't say it.

"Shut up" is not a bad word, but it is definitely rude to say it. It can definitely be taken in the wrong way or taken as very aggressive and antagonizing.

If someone is telling you, "You're u gly, you're fat, ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!" Then I would most definatley say shut up. If someone said, "Oh my God, I got tickets to Big Day Out!!!!!" I'd say, "Shut up!!!!!" As in, "Oh, dude!!!!!!" 'Shut up' is acceptable in both those situations. It is definatly not a bad word, but it;s not really polite in other sinerios. (Yeah, I know I spelled that wrong)

I consider "Shut Up" to be a bad word, because it is not nice, nor does it teach anything. There is a more polite/proper way to ask someone to be quiet please. Shut up is not one in my opinion.
