I read saw a video from a reliable source that wrapping your Serial ATA cable with a pencil is good for your PC build since it takes less space and thus improves air flow. Is this true? Is it recommended? Will it damage the cable? Thank you.

Its fine, I wrap them pretty tightly and put a cable tie/tie wrap on them. I assemble computers professionally and have done this probably 1,000 or more times with no problems.

Wow. so simple it just might work.
No I don;t think there will be any damage to the cable itself, but leave a good inch or more on wrapped on either end, can't speak for the connectors. What I wonder is if the coil is actually less of an obstacle to air flow than a good old jumble.
It does decrease the chances of a cable falling in to the cpu fan and frying your chip. That's a darn good reason to do it right there...
goes to get pencil....

It never hurt with IDE, but it probably won't make that much of a difference.
