what on earth has whether or not you talk on the tube got to do with political correctness?
As far as I'm aware people have never spoken much on the tube - a mix of the noise of the rattley trains, British reserve, and savvy London nutter-avoidance

Not really. People, particularly commuters, don't like to be spoken to by strangers on the tube - after all, they're just waking up going to work or finishing work on the way home. People don't usually object to acquantainces speaking to each other.
