Hi there, it actually does not cost anything for your work to be copyrighted. It happens automatically in the U.S. Almost everything (books, music, poetry, art) created privately and originally after April 1, 1989 is copyrighted and protected whether it has a notice or not. So, it would be free. However, if you needed to enforce the copyright (meaning if someone copied you), you would need to hire a lawyer and then could cost you anywhere from $50/hour up.

Find the Library of Congress on line. They have a great site. Here you can find out how to register your copyright with them. I did it years ago and it was $10. It's probably more now. The copyright is free as the lawyer said, but it costs money to register it with the Library of Congress. I think you still have to provide them with two copies.

If you are able to get it published, it should cost you nothing to have it copyrighted.

But if you want to get it before you are published, then you would have to contact the Library of Congress.
