i have a 1992 Geo Prizm that has been sluggish for the last month. Last night i was driving at 60 mph and it just stopped and the check light came on. battery is good and I checked all the fuses related to fuel. The relay i pulled out but I have no way of checking it except by sight. I am wondering if this could be a fuel filter problem or is more related to the pump or distributer. Thx

It could be your alternator! If your driving and your car shuts off and it ain't the battery...the next place to check is the alternator.

Sounds like you haven't tuned it up in a while. Go ahead and replace the Plugs, Plug wires, Distributor, Air Filter, Fuel filter and PCV Valve. If money's tight, just do the fuel filter first and see how it helps. Fuel pumps do go weak and you should feel a rough idle, sluggishness when taking off and bad fuel mileage. A shop can check the fuel pressure to determine if it is the fuel pump. If you don't experience any of these symptoms, it could be an electrical problem. Also have the alternator tested. Any autoparts place can do it for you.

The Geo Prism is the same as a chevy Metro. They get great gas mileage, but have no power, no looks, and the value is very low. with that many miles, if its in good shape, its worth around $500. This car will need repairs, but will not be super expensive,

Unfortunately, you will need to have the fault codes extracted from the vehicle computer. The codes will be able to tell the mechanic what is wrong or where to start looking for the cause of your problem. With the complex computerized vehicles today, it is going to be hard to say until a mechanic can actually start doing a diagnosis.

If it has the 1.8l there is a ground wire that goes from the ignition coil to the engine block. Make sure its secured. This happened to me on a busy highway out of town. All I did was wiggle it and it srated back up again hpe it works.
