Of course there has always been violence in the NHL but it seems to have peaks and valleys. For example, the '70s were quite violent but the '80s were more about skating and scoring. A few notable incidents aside, the '90s had lots of clutching and grabbing but it doesn't seem like there was as much vicious stickwork as there is in today's game. What do you think?

60's or the 70's. The worst incident I can think of was 1969. Ted Green and Wayne Maki. 60's and 70's were the Big Bad Bruins and the 70's had the Broad Street Bullies.

I would say from 65'-75'.

I'd say the 30s. Have you ever seen a picture of Eddie Shore? And he's the poster boy for that era. All the players looked like that and the goalies were worse.
Today's hockey is pretty tame by comparison.
Look at his numbers 165 pims in 44 gp!

'70s. It had to do with the WHA's brand of hockey: fights, fights, and more fights. The NHL had to keep up so they decided to do some fighting of their own. It was kind of like that Simpsons episode where Homer goes to a hick bar out of town and turned that waitress into a country singer. "Wanna fight?" "Them's fightin' words!"
