why do towels get strings and stringy looking after washing?

Either the towels were of low quality to begin with or you have something in the wash with them together that pulls the snags/strings. Terricloth can either be woven (towels/bathrobes etc.) or knit (like socks).

because that is what towels are made of. strings all woven together.
