Didn't both Copernicus and Galileo say that the Earth revolves around the Sun?
I don't understand why Galileo got singled out for persecution if Copernicus said the same thing a hundred years earlier.

Copernicus came out with his theories first, and the Catholic Church had just gone through the Reformation so they decided to just ignore it and not involved themselves in more turmoil. Between Copernicus and Galileo even more scientists were strengthening the heliocentric theory, so when Galileo started publicizing his work in Italian, a vernacular language (meaning everyone could read it), the church began to take action and Galileo was brought before the inquisition.

Copernicus Contribution

I rolled my cart up in front of Copernicus's house and started banging my tin drum. The local boys told me that it was just about time for Nic to head to Starbuck's for his morning coffee and I was lucky, because after only a few hits, he stuck his pointy nose out the door and said something to me in Polish.

"Hey, Dorothy, no sprecha da lingo," I pointed at my sign, which read "ALMS FOR AN OLD WAR VETEREN" in about ten languages, but I guess Nic could see my legs tucked up underneath me, cause he just gave me the finger and told me to go to Hell. So, zip from him. I left my honey jar on his stoop where I was sure he would trip over it.

About 40 years later I was rolling the same scam thru pizzaland when I ran into this young med student named Galileo, trying to hook up with a barmaid by telling her he was 'gonna be a doctor'.

Yeah, as if, and I am gonna have Jupiter's moons named after me.

Oops, I guessed I said that out loud, 'cause before you can say 'heliocentric', a couple steel hats wheeled me outside and beat the antipasto out of me.

So, really... the difference between Copernicus and Galileo's contributions? Nic was nil, but at least I didn't get a bruised kidney out of it, like I did from GiGi.
