When you relax your fingers, they are slightly curved. To straighten your finger, you need to contract the muscles on the top of your finger. A splint is slightly curved so the muscles that extend your finger are not forced into a contracted position. If the finger was splinted straight, the contracted muscles would get really sore after a few hours, which would make the injury much more painful. Also, if muscles remain in a contracted position for an extended length of time, the muscle fibers begin to shorten, and it can be very difficult to get them stretched back out. .
