I live in San Francisco and I rent an in-law apartment in the basement of this house next to the garage. My kitchen is located outside my place and in the garage with a gas stove. Is this illegal?

how well is the garage ventilated? Is there a draft hood? Legal maybe but doesn't sound so safe. You can check with your cities building code or state code to be sure though.

Call your town hall and ask them if it's in the building code. You want any place you rent to be safe. Good luck.

I can't see why it would be any less safe than having it in a kitchen, as long as it's piped correctly, leak free and in good working condition.
