what if I actually want the whole toast?

When I was a kid, at dinner, my Grandfather used to ask if anyone wanted a piece of bread. When someone said "yes", he would then ask if they wanted the whole piece. Of course, they said yes. He would then rip the center out of the piece of bread and give them the "hole" piece!!! I miss those days!!!

Better than calling it a toasted piece! That would be something else entirely!

because we say piece of bread. It's not the whole loaf, just a piece of it. Now it's toasted so...

I guess because you use a piece or bread to make it. Unless you use the whole loaf...
