I believe each person's perception of beauty affects self-esteem, not just being beautiful. If someone perceives beautiful as looking like a supermodel, playboy bunny, (guy equivalents too) etc, and they do not look like that, they will likely have a low self-esteem. If they perceive beauty more realistically, they are more likely to fit their definition of beauty and have a higher self-esteem.

To some extent: studies have shown that someone beautiful receives more attention from parents and teachers and peers.

I think that they'll therefore grow up with a better self-esteem than a more average looking person, have more confidence and more generally use (consciously or not) their beauty to their own advantage.

In what way?

Being beautiful in a traditional sense doesnt affect your self esteem in any way - the link i have provided notes Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana as people who were believed to have low self esteem....i.e not feeling worthy of themselves and they were classically beautiful women..

Its mainly to do with your own self worth...if you dont think you are attractive...no-one else will, hence the term 'blow your own trumpet'

Self esteem is something that you aquire by knwing all the great things about yourself...I dont think being beautiful is a determining factor...its believing that you are beautiful...even if many percieve you as not asthetically....when they meet you face to face...they could be bowled over by that twinkle in your eye or your charm or intellect....all becuase your self esteem reflects how you feel about yourself....

Have I stopped making any sense...I think I need a bar of chocolate! phew....

I definitely think that beauty has an in pact on how a person feels and behaves, if one is confident in their beauty then they do not have to make so much effort in society, , the ugly ones have to provide the entertainment! Being beautiful releases one from having a personality, it just catches up with one later in life when one realises there are expectations, then the realisation that one is a shallow **** emerges......

yeah i think it does. if someone is pretty and sees someone prettier then the first person will be jealous and wonder if they are pretty at all! unattractive people would be very self conscious and probably have low self esteem simply because of their looks. in this world, everyone is judged by their appearance so if you don't have a nice appearance then you'd feel bad and QED have low self esteem

Sometimes, but I know some people who would not be considered beautiful who have a lot of self-confidence.
