The bass is easier , but the guitar is best to learn first (and you can play a guitar on campouts, or just sitting around with friends)

This question isn't so cut and dry as some would like to think. Being a bass player myself for about 20 yrs I'd have to say that it depends on what type of music you are playing and what type of bass lines you want to produce. Every bass player should know some guitar since it would help with what notes belong in each chord, and yes, a guitar is really nice at camp-outs. However. A guitarist can just play a chord and let it ring out while the bassist has to keep the beat going along with the drummer since the bass and drums are part of the rhythym section. The bassist has to actually listen to the drummer (mainly the kick drum and snare drum) and stay in synch with him/her as you move around on the neck of the bass.
So, my best advice for you would be to first learn some basic chords on the guitar.
It's very gratifying learning the guitar solo from your favourite song, but it's also just as gratifying getting a complex rhythym part in perfect synch with a drummer while moving around on the neck of the bass.
Hope this helps.

No, bass is not really easier. It's much more difficult to play chords on a bass plus the thicker, heavier strings makes it much more difficult to play rapidly. Playing bass requires more finger strength than playing a guitar. I will say that playing the bass is more of a calling. Some people are simply drawn to it. Otherwise, why else would you choose to play an instrument that doesn't get much respect and gets you virtually no notice in a band?

The bass is a much simpler instrument to learn, but my advice is, if you want to learn both, learn them at the same time. I was in the same position as you, and decided to learn them both. I found that they complemented each other. A lot of ideas were similar, but then again, there were enough differences so that my practise sessions were never boring. When I thought I'd done enough on one instrument, I switched to the other. Bass also helps your finger strength a lot more than guitar, where as guitar helps develop your dexterity. Both skills being very important for both instruments.

learn guitar first. it is more difficult but will give you a full understanding of note locations. the four strings on a bass are the same as the top four on a guitar. note wise. just a lower octave. so if you learn the guitar first you will know them. then all you have to do is learn the different techniques for bass play. good luck. music is a great thing to know how to make.

If you only want to play three of four chords get, a guitar. Bass is much better. Guitar players are a dime a dozen. A good Bassist will always find work.

it depends on what style you are playing. rock bass is easy,...jazz bass is not.
rock bass you just move along with the chords
jazz bass you add in extra notes and pluk and slap the strings so it's more of a challenge
