I had my first ultrasound yesterday. I am 5 weeks, 2 days. They were only able to see the sac which they said was what they expected at this early stage and to be happy that my sac and hCG level were where they should be at 5 weeks. They said that in a week, they may be able to hear a heartbeat. Yet I've heard other people say it can take up to the 8th week until the heartbeat is found. I'm a chronic worrier and I'm wondering when I should go for my second ultrasound? If I wait too long, I'll be worried during the long wait. If I go next week and they can't find a haertbeat, I'll be worried too and stress over a possible blighted ovum. I hate being like this. :-( What would you recommend as a good time to go for a second ultrasound, especially for a worrier like me?

I know it's hard waiting and it feels like forever but I would wait until 10 or 11 weeks! Best to you !

I know exactly what you mean about being a chronic worrier, so am I.
I can't believe they already done an ultrasound at 5 weeks. My daughter found out she was pregnant at 7 weeks and the doctor would not even make an appointment until she was at least 10 weeks. And she didn't have her first "scheduled" ultrasound until she was 19w5d. (and it was awesome). They listened to the hearbeat with doppler at her 10 week appointment.
However, yes with ultrasound it is possible to hear the heartbeat at around 6 weeks. Anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks.
Please try not to worry (I know it's hard). But it will fly by. My daughter is already 22w5d and she is having a boy.
Congratulations and good luck.
Also, when you get 10 weeks (you can't hear it until 8-10 weeks) you should buy or rent a doppler heartbeat monitor. They are awesome, we just listened to my grandsons a few minutes ago. I ordered mine from amazon. It cost $125.00 and worth every dime.

I was in the exact same position with my last pregnancy. I went in a week and 1 day later for the second u/s (6weeks5days prego) and there was a strong heartbeat! Thankfully. Not only would it have been my 4th m/c but it was also my birthday. It was the best present ever....

If your hcg count is good then don't worry sweetie. The heartbeat should be there in less than two weeks. I know that I personally could not wait more than a week and a half, I would just be in agony worrying. I wish you the best :)

I had a scan at 7w4d and there was a strong 150bpm heartbeat! I went to my best friends first scan and she was 6w6d and it already had a strong heartbeat.

You seriously need to relax and let nature take its course. Stressing about something you can't control is going to eat you up and it'll be all you think about.
I totally understand what it is like but to be doubly sure I would have the next scan done between 7-8weeks if its really necessary and the doctor suggests it.

Just relax. What you saw at 5weeks is very normal and the next scan all you will see is a white blob. By 12-13weeks you can see the outline of a skeleton with all its arms and legs so don't expect too much before then okay!

Relax and breathe! Everything will be fine

I would of thought they would repeat a ultrasound in 2 weeks time , just to double check everything is ok !! Im sure everything will be fine I had a vaginal ultrasound at 5 weeks 5 days and they could see a nut JUST and found a heartbeat !!
I had to go back 2 weeks later to comfirm everything was ok ! I think the 8 week mark would be a good time to put your mind at ease !
Good luck

Don't stress about it. 5 weeks 2 days is too early to see a heartbeat. I would have another scan done when you are about 12 weeks. At this time you'll see the baby and the heartbeat. It truly is an amazing experience. Congrats and good luck.

Don't worry--- I don't think you as a patient get to decide when to have your ultrasounds. Most likely, they'll do another one around 12-13 weeks to get a good due date for the baby. They can hear the heartbeat via the doppler at your next month's appt.--- no ultrasound needed.

Just wait. You're just pregnant-- let that little one grow a bit.

I am 12 weeks pregnant and I have not had an ultrasound yet. I did hear the heartbeat last week at 11 weeks.

My doctors say that I will only get one ultrasound at 18-20 weeks unless something may be wrong.

They said that the ultrasounds put out radiation and you should have as little done as possible.

usually you arent allowed to choose when you have an ultrasound, if you are in the uk you will have a scan at 12 weeks then again at 20weeks (sometimes also at 16 weeks) but thats it, unless you pay for private ulrtasound which can cost around £200 each. dont worry, the doctors know what they're doing and if its likely you will need any extra ultrasounds they will give you one, but only if there may be a problem with the baby, you cant choose to have one whenever you want

they can HEAR the heartbeat on the doppler at 8-9 weeks but they can SEE it beating on the ultrasound much earlier than that. of course different babies grow at different rates so give it about a week of flexability, before you worry. best rule of thumb is that if your doc isnt worried then you shouldnt be. so try to relax because worrying isnt good for you during pregnancy, its not good for you at all but when you got a baby in there you gotta be more carefull of your stress levels. good luck.

Ahhh...yes, it's a long wait but worth it! :) I would wait until your 8th week...actually, I'm kind of surprised they saw you earlier than that to begin with since there really isn't much to see before 8 weeks. Try to relax, hard I know, but your first report was really good and it sounds like you have nothing to worry about. Is this your first pregnancy? Try to enjoy it! You don't want to spend your whole pregnancy worried about every little thing, you'll want to look back on it and be happy that you took it all in and loved every minute. :) Congrats on your pregnancy! :)
