Don't know about all of them, but my Floridian relatives
often let me know when all the old buzzards arrive for the winter.

Yep, buzzards (turkey vultures) do migrate south for the winter, into the southern states and even South America. They have trouble finding food, since frozen carrion doesn't give off an, odor, and their alternate food source (grass) is dormant. We have vultures in Texas ALL the time, though, so I've never seen a migration.

in Florida we don't call them buzzards we reserve that name for lawyers. We call them "turkey vultures" cause they weigh about 25lbs and have a wing span of 24 to 36 inches. We have "sandhill cranes" that are 5 ft.tall , maybe 40lbs and a wing span of about 6' and yes they stay here all year 'round.

Nope, we have our share of buzzards year round here in Carolina. I only worry if they are hovering over MY head.

Makes perfect sense to me.
Where I live we know winter is on the way when the wind blows from the north and not the south. The birds stay year round.
