Nah, you don't cancel Christmas. You change it from the materialistic orgy it's become to something with meaning for your family, in good times and bad.

Maybe it's a time for home-made gifts. (You'll treasure the inept gifts from kids all your life. My mom put out my lopsided pinecone Christmas tree until she died.) Or a gift of a Saturday afternoon alone with Mommy, who'll take you out for ice cream and read to you for hours. Or carols and a party at church. Or a deeply religious celebration.

Kids can be swayed to accept change because it's the right thing to do. Commercialism and greed are the ugliest parts of the holiday. Maybe moving away from that would be right even if you hadn't been fired.

Make sure Christmas includes frequent reading aloud of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," which explains that it's not about gifts and feasts at all, but about being together and sharing joy.

Oh Doll, that so sucks. No you can't cancel Christmas. Do it simply and lovingly. Make it all about them the very best you can. Single moms know how you feel right now. There are heart aches and then some heart breaks but it does pass and how you deal with this will make a mark on your kids forever, good or bad. Please remember this and know that we are all here for you.

That really sucks. If they're very little, I don't think they'll understand a complete cancellation of Christmas, but you don't need to give 'em expensive gift and stuff. Just tell 'em they are going to get less gifts, but you'll cook something good and you'll spend the day with them. Try to get them a smile, and tell your kids that when you'll get on your feet you'll give them a suprise.
My best wishes, you'll find a less moronic boss

That really suck Wish, I'm sorry. The kiddies won't really understand if they still believe in Santa. My kids Christmas is rotten this year as well, only because of the mortgage. It hurts as a mom when that crap happens. Don't give up hope though sweetie. I always find that if there's a will, there's a way. I'm really sorry baby! I feel your pain.

p.s. It's rotten of any one to go ahead and fire someone right before Christmas.

Oh wow. Well dont tell them you are "canceling" christmas. Just buy a cheap gift for each and maybe save up for a dinner at dennys or something? Im not sure lol this is a difficult situation.

I'm so sorry, Wish.

The person before is right. In the words of Henry David Thureau, "Simplify, simplify." Maybe not having the distraction of all the stuff helps to bring focus on the important things.

Meantime, I will pray for you and your family.

You'll have to ad-lib a bit but I bet you'll have the best Xmas ever. Let the kids be creative, appreciate the simpler things in life. Not working at Xmas is highly recommended, not working all year round is a dream! x

That does indeed. I know the owner here has been known to fire people right before Christmas so he doesn't have to pay them a bonus. Then he rehires them after the first of the year.

Don't cancel christmas. If your kids are young, tell them that Christmas is not about the presents, and get them something small. YOu don't want "Santa Claus" to let them down.

If your kids are older, then you can explain to them, and they will understand. They might not like it, but they will understand.

Yes,

that sounds typical of employers to fire you 2 weeks before Christmas.
