Can I watch Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, without watching the original star wars?
If not, can you give me some background information?

Really 1-3 give background information on the original 4-6.
But they were meant to watch 4-6,1-3. It depends, do you want to watch the first three knowing the ending? Ie, anakin becomes darth vader...etc. (I'm hoping you know that, or else have you been living under a rock....? Maybe not, I just live with Star Wars fanatics).
And I didn't mind the first three, they weren't that bad... better special effects anyway.

Yes you can. You actually get a better sense of the story watching 1+2+3+4+5+6 than watching it in this order: 4+5+6+1+2+3

Episode 1 is the true beginning of the story so it is not necessary to watch the original Star Wars first.

Just so you are aware though, Episodes 1-3 are horrible. The original Star Wars series (Episodes 4-6) are absolutely amazing and worth watching again and again.

Yes you can. In fact Star wars episode1 sets up the old movies. You see,No1 takes place about 20 years before the old movies.

Of course you can. Chronologically, the plot of "The Phantom Menace" takes place before the plot of "A New Hope".
