My family just recently moved out of a home into another and the ex-landlord is being a real pain. My sister (17) didn't change the address at work and her check went to the old house. Well the landlord has it and hasn't called us back. Is there a law against hold mail from us, Can i file a claim against her? What will happen?? Please let me know what i should do. Oh and I have called her about the check already no answer and it's been 24 hours since that call.

How can you know that the landlord has the check? If he really has it, he has committed a federal crime. Call the USPS and report theft of you mail to the postal inspector on duty. The Postal Service takes that stuff very seriously.
By the way, despite what anyone on here may say, it is illegal for the landlord to throw away your mail.

If you can prove that they indeed have possession of the check, then maybe you can get them for taking your property. And tampering with mail is a felony offense, but if you just want it back, I would say keep it in civil court. But you need proof they have the check. But wouldn't the old work location cancel that check and issue you a new one to the new location?

The landlord can not hold the mail, however he can either return to sender or throw it out. No matter what the landlord decides to do, she is not obligated to call you.
