Fiat Punto Lambda Sensor?

Question

If i drive my Fiat Punto 1242cc Mk1 with its Lambda sensor disconnected from the cable will it do any harm? - the engine idles perfectly when it disconnected and lumpy idling when it is connected.

I don't fancy changing the sensor at the moment I will get around to it later but if I leave it disconnected for the time being will it cause any harm or use any more fuel etc...?

You are likely to see your fuel consumption rise. The lamda sensor is what the cars ECU uses to work out the most efficient amount of petrol to inject at a given time. Without it, getting no lambda signal, the ECU will think the mixture is too lean so will keep adding more petrol to richen the mixture but because there is no feedback signal from the lambda sensor, the ECU wil see no change and think the mixture is still too lean, so will add more even more fuel and that cycle continues until it reaches it's predetermined maximum.

You might fail an MOT emissions test as well.

The labda sensor is fitted to the exhaust of the car to monitor the O2 level in the exhaust gasses. The signal from the sensor controls via the engine management system the fuel ratio to the engine.
With the wire removed there is the potential to damage the cat converter and also the car will defiantly fail its next mot.

I had a Renault Scenic (heap of Junk) with a faulty Lambda sensor and was told it would be ok. The Catalytic Converter ended up collapsing, costing several hundred pounds. Not sure if it was related, but somebody else said it was possible, so it might be worth considering replacing the relatively cheap Lambda sensor.

yes it will use more fuel with the lambda sensor disconnected, and the others are right will possibly damage the catalytic converter if left for to long. if short for cash try a universal lambda not ideal but around half the price

by all means disconnect the wiring from it just do not remove the sensor as you will have a hole in your exhaust and you'll use more fuel. you can pick those things up dirt cheap anyway so if i were you id just buy one and be done with it otherwise you could **** up your cat. its not running lumpy when connected for no reason. meeeoooowwwww
