I've been told by evolutionary biologists that new research indicates male homosexual behavior was in part a way to cement male bonding in tribal and hunter-gatherer societies. A man that gave another man a portion of his manhood and seed was demonstrating a form of what we have earlier come to call blood brotherhood. Not for nothing was a certain kind of pleasure involved as well (and as a carry over from the evolution of the same type of behavior in animal species and groups).
For various cultural reasons, larger groups of people have put restrictions on this behavior, and since its pull is often the strongest during times of battle, the restrictions increase in fear that the bonding rituals will carry over into life after the battle and affect the reproduction necessary to replace depleted male population.
But these bonding urges are still with us, and just as there is a pecking order of dominance, there has evolved such an order in the relative strengths of these bonding urges in the overall population.
Psychological factors enter into individual decisions as to how to deal with these urges, as do a variety of cultural attitudes.

we talk about genes and there is almost no evidence of any physical difference between gay and str. none nada rien meiyou
i think we do it because we want to avoid the things we do know a lot about - the childhood conditioning that resulted in getting gay desires
these are causes we know about, that are proven (early family problems) and apparently never, ever, are allowed to discuss.
the term 'collective denial' springs to mind.

I think people are giving into some sexual tendencies and behaviors- I do not believe you are born with it- or that there is a genetic strand of some sort (still havent even found evidence to back that up)
I think the majority of the crowd do it as a sexual fantasy being acted out- It is a choice- I know women who have been screwed over by men and are now lesbian---- Hence that was a choice.
Just my personal opinion that you asked for
