......Rome's Ninth Legion

Rome's Ninth Legion rode bravely to engage
The Celtic Warriors, protecting land
By rights their ancestral home. Both enraged.
Romans vanished...not even blood-soaked sand.

To this hour, a mystery...
What happened on that day.
No horses, armor ever found...history
And legend...each has its say

About that day...that mist-filled valley.
No Roman, horse, no wagon wheel, ever
Seen again. Legend, history never
Uncovered the truth. Descendants' stories?

Note: This is supposed to be a Disembra(?) .
..........The first is an English Sonnet of ABAB.
..........The second Free Form of ABBA.
..........The third, iambic pentameter.

Oh well, it makes a good story...

For a time it was believed, at least by some British historians, that the legion disappeared during its stay in Britain, presumably in conflict with the peoples of present-day Scotland. This idea was used in the novels The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff, Legion From the Shadows by Karl Edward Wagner, Red Shift by Alan Garner, Engine City by Ken MacLeod, Warriors of Alavna by N. M. Browne, and also in the movie The Last Legion. However this view is not now accepted, as there are records of it being based on the continent after its time in Britain

I cant believe the parents left the children alone in the hotel when a side entrance to the dimly lite side street was right next to their rooms external door. They were a long way from the room, out of hearing range if the children were in need and they followed an observable pattern for when they did check on the children. All a predator had to do was wait till the check by a parent was completed, then enter the room and abscond with the child. I hope the child is found. I Hope parents will take greater care of their children when on holidays, not all the people around in holiday destinations are happy holiday makers. Even a wireless listening/monitoring device would have helped. Child protection is everyones responsibility Be safe, be sage

Epic and Chaotic!
But I have to disagree with you on the structure.
A sonnet is a oem of 14 Lines. This has only 12 Lines.
All I see on the first is a rhyme sheme of ABAB. the same on the Second Stanza too. (ABAB)
The third Stanza consist of a Stressed syllable followed by unstressed syllable, but have a little variation. So its not entirely an Iambic Pentameter!
I love your poetry.
Keep writing!

The disappearance of the Roman soldiers and the horses and the armor is exactly that, a legend never to be solved except by the spirit of those who were there and left no record.......

It does make a good story - and leaves a good question! I think that we will never know - one of life's mysteries!
