Because the more efficient we get, the more time we have to do other things, so in the end we are constantly being given more and more responsibilities. Even though we have the resources for all these tasks, we unfortunately do not have the energy OR the mental stamina to keep it up without burning out.

Good question! With maybe not such a good answer. Who says we are busier? The hours worked are less than in previous generations, as you say we have more labour saving devices etc. My view is that as we now have more free time we feel driven to "use" it. Every waking hour has to be spent in doing something or we feel time is wasted. Add to this the media and governments obsession with health and fitness, just sitting down relaxing makes us feel like lardy couch potatoes. Some individuals feel that being under stress is a pre-requisite to a full life, ergo no stress = no life. Or maybe we just cannot handle multi-tasking as well as previous generations did. Maybe things were better when women stayed at home and looked after home and family, and man came home and put his feet up. now with both working they have to juggle everything, fit everything in in a short space of time. Who knows? Maybe we just need to lighten up and concentrate on the important things in life, let go of the unimportant, get things more into perspective and be less materialistic. There is nothing wrong in us putting our feet up occasionally and doing nothing for nothings sake.

Everything's advanced in such a level that there are so many things that people have to do or choose to...In the past there other things too but not as many as now. The whole society expects more from you that they have ever before.

not really. people have more leisure time now and they spend it watching TV. I mean if the person watched a football game or saw a movie or saw american idol or jay leno basically that was leisure time and it's not true they are running ragged.
people fill up the time with things they WANT to do. now poor people who work 2 jobs are really running ragged and so are single moms. they don't have time to watch tv.

Maybe it just seems that way to you because you've reached a point in your life that now you are affected by it. It's always been busy.
