I love history and am most knowledgeable about Tudor and Stuart England, just because it interested me and I read a lot about it; however, now I am fascinated about ancient history and even pre history. I seldom miss shows about archeology or mummies.

Ancient Rome is also my favorite civilization/time period. There are literally hundreds of different factors that made the Roman Empire collapse. Too much expansion on the borders (even after Hadrian pulled back some borders) the barbarians on the frontier were becoming bolder and bolder, they also began coordinated attacks around the same time a plague was wiping out much of the population. The great Roman army had stopped it's invasions and expansion and it turned into an army of occupation so many of the soldiers in the 2nd and 3rd centuries were inexpierenced compared to the conquering forces of Julius Caesars.

Inflation was absolutely rampant and the division between the rich and poor class was devestatingly wide. The people really had know way of knowing how much their money was actually worth from day to day.

Some historians would argue that Christianity actually saved the empire for another hundred years. Romans adopted the religion of the people it conquered into their own canon of religions and after hundreds of years there were thousands of different religions causing divides among it's own people. Christianity brought the people back together for a short time.

A man named Aleric who served in the Roman army demanded land and benefits for his men, when the Roman Senate refused he began a seige on the city cutting off it's trade routes and imports and began starving the city. The people desperate with no provisions opened the gates for his army and they sacked the city. This was in 412 A.D., but another barbarian invader eventually laid waste to the city in 476 A.D. Ironically enough the last emperor of the Western Empire was named Romulus.

I love history and my favorite period is both the Greek and Roman period. Their are so many factors and I believe someone else answered the fall of Rome. My interest lies more in the Republic period. I try to go beyond that, but I just can't seem to get interested. My interest picks back up though in the Medieval times. Anyway, I love Ancient History.

I prefer military medical history, with an emphasis on the American Civil War - to the point that my wife and I have joined a unique and special hobby - that of re-enacting that war. We dress in Civil War-era clothing, sleep in a Civil War-era tent, talk and act like people of the 1860s, and even cook and eat our meals when out "on campaign" as the soldiers and officers did back then. Our fellow re-enactors bring reproduction weapons, such as the three-band Enfield rifle-musket and twelve-pounder Napoleons and three-inch ordnance rifles (cannons!) and go out and shoot at other re-enactors portraying Confederates. No bullets or cannon balls, of course - but we can do a pretty convincing firefight, fer sure! Come on out and watch us this summer! There are Civil War reenactments all over the country, but primarily in the area east of the Mississippi River. We love to have visitors come see what we do.

My favourite period has to be the Byzantine period. It was a time of turmoil and intellectual decline in the West but also a time of growth and architectural wonder in the East though certain things were being preached in Arabia and Persia was wobbling after its latest war with the Byzantines
