Only do what the instructions tell you! If your lights are rated to the supply voltage, and suitable for outdoor use, as must be your extension lead, then yes. If you are not sure then please don't attempt it. If your supply voltage is AC and your lights DC you must use a transformer anyway to get them: a) to work, and b) to not blow up. And be careful with the lead if it is passed through a window jamb, in case it gets damaged. Make sure your extension lead is fully uncoiled and rated for the current draw (amps). I hate to be a scrooge at Christmas but if you have to ask this question you shouldn't attempt it. There is real risk of fire or electrocution if you get this wrong. Ask a person competent with electrics who can inspect your lights for the only answer you can trust. Have a great Christmas.

You can do this providing you take precautions! Do not wrap anything in insulation tape or plastic bags etc (very dodgy) Any thing that is usable outside electric wise will have an IP rating this stands for " Ingression Protection", and is normally between IP45 & IP65. Good DIY stores sell boxes with these ratings in a variety of sizes some even come with extension leads inside, these vary in price from £10 to £30.As long as the power source is plugged in in a dry area things will be ok.
If you have more than one item to plug in just count up the indiviual amp ratings or wattage, as long as they dont exceed your extension cable rating your ok.Hope thats helpful Happy Christmas!!!

I use extension cords on my lights. I wrap the connections in plastic bag and duct tape to keep from getting shorted out by rain. Same should work with the transformer.
