Brush up on your basic algebra skills, including your ability to read a story problem and convert the information into an equation. Just basic arithmetic skills is one of the things that tends to sink a lot of students in Chemistry.
Be willing to spend a fair amount of time working more problems than are assigned.
Be willing to ask (both in class and outside of class) for help or clarification. Whether that is from the other students, or tutors, or the instructor, DO ASK.
Know that some things you'll just have to memorize (element names, symbols...). Chemistry will be a new language and some parts of it you just plain have to memorize. Don't try to just memorize everything, though. You'll need to learn and understand the ideas, the process, the concepts in order to apply them to new situations on exams.
Good luck. Chemistry is a wonderful fun interesting subject. Approach it with an open mind and with a willingness to learn, and you should do fine. Feel free to contact me through here if I can help...

I have taken Chem 100 at VCU just to refresh my memory from high school. I have also taken 101 and lab this semester. I thought Chem 100 was very easy. If your school has a solutions manual for the book be sure to buy it. It will show you how to do all the problems in the book. You can also ask the teacher for help if you need it just in case your school has classes as large as mine. We have about 300 per class so it is hard to get your questions in sometimes. Some more advice for you would be to study as much as possible. Go to SI sessions or study groups. Whatever your school offers. Make a friend in class so that yall can study together. Sometimes students explain things better. You also may want to get the book before the class begins. I'm guessing you are taking it in the Spring so you can study now. Good luck.

Depends on how those go around you. If you got the highest mark and second was 47, then its good If you got the lowest and the average was 87 then no it aint so good. You must be able to decide from that info. However i will say that chemistry is an extremely hard exam and whilst many do fail, it is possible to improve your marks significantly through regular study

Know how to use the periodic table. Ask lots of questions if you don't understand things, and don't be afraid to use office hours. Do as many practice problems as you can, and try to form a study group with others in your class.
