Thanks EveT -- My son didn't have school today, so I took the day off. It's good to be home.

#1 - near the ocean - I'm a water baby and the sound of the surf and water and sand and salt air combine to be my paradise.

#2 - in the city - I love the energy and vitality of most cities...and the ability to walk to restaurants and cultural events and sidewalk cafes and flea markets.

#3 - the river - in Savannah, Ga.- funky shops, cargo ships, diverse people and fantastic history! - also it's 10 miles to the ocean!

I was raised in the mountains of southern Oregon and enjoy going back for a visit. The Rogue River was the master in the valley where I lived.

I have lived in NJ since 1960 when I came here as a young bride. In the late 80's, kids grown and on their own, single, I moved back to the mountains. I only lasted 7 years...missed everything here.

In southern NJ, we are 45 minutes from the best beaches on the Atlantic seaboard, 20 minutes from center city Philadelphia, a coupla hours by train to New York City and an easy 3 hour drive to Washington DC.

I could never live far from the ocean or the city again.

Hello, We live in such a environment. They have been walking to the school or bus stop for years on there own. There are always those things that happen at the bus stop though, safe environment or not. Such as little one getting picked on then the little ones grow to be the ones to pick etc.. It is really up to the parent and it has nothing to do with being lazy. If we lived in any kind of city I would (like most parents) worry regardless of how "safe" of a city we lived in. When the kids were going to the grade school that was right out the back door (100 or so acres then school next to it) I would stand in the back watching for them every day. I still watch for them to walk down the road from the bus stop. Everyone knows everyone and it is not a safety reason, it is just habit I guess? We will always worry about our children. It is up to the parents and how the kids are.

I've lived for several years just 3 miles from the Atlantic in a city of almost 500,000. I spent 13 months in Antarctica, 12 months in the Middle East, 6 months on an island in the South Indian Ocean, 3 1/2 years on the coast of the Mediterranean 3 years in a big city in Japan. I've spent time in the mountains in winter AND summer.
I've found I'm pretty adaptable.
I would love to find a place where it's in the low 70's to mid 80's year around.

Hi Wick, what are you doing home so early? Nice to see your
questions. Okay, here would be my perfect setting.....to live in the country, surrounded by woods, with the beautiful view of the mountains visible as I enjoyed my coffee every morning.
I would only be a mile from the ocean and it would be visible from my deck up on top of my house. I would be able to enjoy the changing of the seasons but winter would only last, like here, about six weeks, but there would be snow also. There would be nice springs, only two Mo's of hot, hot weather and then, of course, there would be beautiful autumns. How's that for a dream? As it is, I live near lakes and bayous and I'm 20-25 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico. I miss everything about my home where I lived for my first 35 years in Indiana except that the winters last sooooo long. Today, here, it was in the 80's and my yard and every place around this area of Texas....there are beautiful plants and flowers. Oh well....I can dream can't I?

1) In the mountains is definately out...I have seen far too many fires lately to ever invest my life there
2) Near a river...I have seen far too many floods when I lived in the midwest, and now in the north west to want to go through that stuff
3)IN the city....tried that and ....well, depends on what you call "the city." A large city..NO...a suburb, YES!
I live in Southern California, Orange Count to be exact, have made a totally private yard and house, is 5 minutes from the Ocean, 30 minutes from down town LA, 80 minutes from San Diego, 90 minutes to Tiajana, 1 1/2 hours from Palm Springs, and 3 1/2 hours from Las Vegas. I can be in the mountains within 20 minutes, sit on a pier's cafe and see Catlina Island in one direction, and snow capped mountains in the other...I love exactly where I live! Wouldn't live anywhere else. Now, if I could just figure out some way to afford it, I would really be happy. Phil

I've lived in San Francisco, so I could go to the ocean anytime I wanted to. That would mean I already did the city bit, also If you really live in the mountains, that would mean cold and winter snow, so no to that. Do love the large trees and quiet tho. Think I will pick near or by the river, although not too close that it would flood. Maybe up higher looking over the river. I may have to think that over, because that would mean a steep hike down or up to get to the river. Lets just say close enough to the river so not to get flooded out if the river should flood.

I live in the perfect place, 2 blocks from the ocean, about 5 minutes to downtown, and 30 minutes to the mountains.... ~2000 ft. There's camping along the Santa Ynez River (and water when it's flowing). It doesn't snow here and the coldest is about right now.... 45 degrees. It has snowed in the "Mountains" so that is is visible from the city but always gone in a day.

The REAL mountains are the Sierra Nevadas. Yosemite is ~350 miles and skiing is closer if you want it.

None of you come here.... It's too crowded. LOL :+)

Have lived in a mega sized city, in the mountains, and visited near the ocean. The place I love the best is the country, about 10-15 miles away from a river.

for 27 years I lived ib Stuart,Florida. Lived on the St.Lucie River go 1 mlile east I was at the Intercoastal Waterway ,go 1 mile farther east you were on the beach of the Atlantic Ocean.West Palm Beach was only 20 miles south on US 1.It was great until taxes and property insurance rose 150%.From Stuart you could run a boat from the ocean all the way across the state to Tampa and the Gulf of Mexico.Today you almost have to be a multi-millionaire just to remain "middle class" Fun while it lasted.
