Detrimental reliance is an aspect of promissory estoppel. For example, in order to make a case for recovery under the theory of promissory estoppel, the claimant normally has to prove:
a) There was a promise

b) There was reasonable reliance on that promise that put the claimant in a position of detriment, or detrimental reliance.

Detrimental reliance - injured party mut prove that the reliance was reasonable, foreseeable and that some harm resulted to get a legal action to force one to perform an obligation. Theory of promissory estoppel - A promise was made and injustice can only be avoided by enforcing the promise. Promissory estoppel is the theory a judge uses to right a wrong whereas detrimental reliance is what the plaintiff must prove to allow the judge to rule under this theory to get legal action.

Detrimental reliance- a promise which the promisor should reasonably expect to induce action or forbearance of a definite and substantial character on the part of the promisee and which does induce such action or forbearance is binding if injustice can be avoided only by enforcement of the promise. Restatement (Second) removed the requirement that the detriment be "substantial".

Promissory estoppel - the doctrine of promissory estoppel prevents one party from withdrawing a promise made to a second party if the latter has reasonably relied on that promise and acted upon it.
