It is very normal for your 12 year old son to begin masturbating (note spelling). At 12 he is beginning puberty and his body is being flooded with male hormones. His penis is growing and becoming erect at all times of the day and night and with those erections a greater sensitivity to sexual arousal and those urges need to be dealt with in a healthy manner. It is not only okay to masturbate it is actually good for your son and his reproductive system. It enables him to assume responsibilty for his sexual urges, it keeps the system healthy, it helps him control those random erections, and it has a calming affect. So you need to let him know that since he is getting older and maturing he will be wanting to masturbate and it is okay. That at first he may not produce any semen or fluid but when he does he should clean up with kleenex and just put it into the trash can in his room. That since he is growing up more you will make an effort to respect his privacy and will not come into his room if the door is closed and will knock and wait to be invited in. ( or similar rules, esentially the same privacy rules you would like him to follow when coming into your bedroom) tell him to avoid porn it is not good for him and he does not need it and then leave the box of kleenex. At 12 to 14 it will not be unusual for your son masturbate 2 to 3 times a day so try and give him private time in early mornings, after school, and at night. From 15 to 17 3 to 5 times a week. It will lessen as he matures and gets more control over his sexual urges and moves into adulthood. 18 until married he will masturbate as needed and it will be about 3 times a week the rest of his life until he has a lover or partner. Masturbation is not un healthy, it is not immoral, and it is not a sin. It is a form of sex and needs to be kept personal and private.

For each person, there is a different age where they discover the fact that their private areas are for more than just urination. Oftentimes, it's by accident...they touch something abnormally completely innocent and "discover" that something feels good or pleasurable. That's what happened to me. I didn't know the "facts of life" until I took Health in 7th grade, but I had figured out that certain touches felt better than others for no particular reason.
Other people are told how to do things by older classmates or peers. This is what happens to most people...I just happen to have lived a very self-sequestered life. I didn't allow people to tell me that kind of stuff unless it was an adult I trusted.
Finding out how to masturbate is completely "normal" and to be expected in our modern, sex-centered society. However, if you have religious/moral objections to it, you might try explaining to him the reasons why you don't want him to be doing it. That may help stave off his activity. If you're not concerned about it, then just know that it is normal...and you might watch his activity with girls for a while. Masturbation may lead to an early curiosity in "real sex" that is a whole other issue entirely.

Yes, he is entering puberty and it is a perfectly normal function. Don't draw he masturbating to his attention, chastise or tease him; give him privacy. If he askes any questions about it or about sex be honest with him. Does he have a father or other adult male that is willing to answer questions honestly with him and not encourage him to sow his "wild oats", but be frank.

That's about when I started. Once I started I counld not stop because it felt so good. I was a little hesitant at first because some of the other guys in my seventh grade class said if you did it then you would get stupid. I did it anyway, all the time.

Absolutely! It's completely normal! Children start masturbating at age 4 or even younger according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

I started at about that age. It's not a question that ever comes up when I'm talking to my mates but I'm certain they were all about the same age aswell.
