The reason I ask this question is clearly given the fact that resources are limited, the government has to decide on whether to go after organized crime, drug lords, corportate fraud, stock fraud, anti trust cases, those who willingly sell tainted products to unsuspecting public, etc...... But the government has chosen to spend years and millions to take down Barry Bonds... why?

Barry Bonds is a bad man. He cheated, his records should be revoked, he is a shame. Many of the youth in this country idolize him, and we need to set an example of what happens to drug using cheaters in professional sports. He is unfit to be a role model. What's really getting him into trouble is that he lies about it! Yes, I think it's important they make an example of him, he is not above the law and he's about to find out.

Barry just got caught up in a much bigger investigation. It's not like he was the focal point. And all he had to do was say, "Yeah, I took some stuff he gave me."
But he didn't, he tried to stonewall, then lied about it. People go to jail all the time for obstructing investigations without having really committed a crime, just ask Martha Stewart and Lewis Libby.

As I understand it, the charge of perjury is for lying to Congress about it when they were all called to testify about it to a/the Congressional committee. "Federal" is really just another name for "government." Apparently, they had enough evidence to pursue the charges. Everything else you mentioned typically lacks the evidence to pursue charges. That's where Enron screwed up.
My question is when and why did Congress get involved in the baseball steroids issue in the first place?

The feds are like any bunch of bad employees. They don't want to be busy, they just want to look that way. The federal governments job should be to run the federal government, not harass famous people for doing things that if they weren't famous they would never talk to.

To send the message that if you lie under oath, you will be prosecuted. The steroid abuse needs to be removed from professional sports.
