There isn't any simple definition that seems to work. All living things reproduce, right? Does that mean mules are not alive? There are exceptions to all the other simple rules, but you are welcome to come up with a new one.

I asked this in a class the other day, and one of the responses I received was "contains water." Clearly things like buckets contain water and are not alive, but how many living things are there that do not contain water? Add it to your list.
