The purpose of written language was to facilitate non verbal communication. However, most if not all languages got their start purely verbally. No one wrote anything down. The benefits of writing (keeping records, historical documents, two way communication with one party absent) definitely kept in in play withe the human race, but in our long history and in all cultures, the spelling of words has slowly changed over time. Some changes in spelling stuck, some did not. The ones that held strong were the words that the general populous of a society decided to use as a whole. This was probably because although the spelling had changed, the word was close enough to it's original spelling to not cause a lot of confusion for anyone. For instance, when the British first came to America, they spelled the word color- c-o-l-o-u-r. Now the more common spelling is c-o-l-o-r. So we took the 'u' out of color much like we take the 'e' out of txt. These abbreviations, brought about by a need to save time in the modern world, will only stick around if society in general agrees on them. Seeing as most of them are generally understandable, it wouldn't be too far fetched to say that the word 'text' will be spelled as t-x-t in future dictionaries. So do I believe in a world where people can spell? Yes. Do I believe in a world where people can spell correctly? No. Do I believe in a world where people are smart enough to discern small spelling variations and make sense of modern written communication? Definitely.

That world for sure doesn't exist on the Internet. Spell Checker has made the new generation lazy. We don't have to worry about spelling because Spell Checker will do it for us. Spell Checker just corrected like five of my words in this very post...

LOL
I believe MOST (80%) people CAN spell, but they are just lazy.
Sometimes I've even caught myself using my MSN spelling onto real life paper when I'm writting something and then I have to scribble it and correct it, its quite embarrasing. :)

I used to live there, but txt aliens have invaded my planet and proper spelling and grammar have been abolished. I think I may have even been punished for this answer if I hadn't put "txt" in at the beginning.
Oy.
