Get some of that bread with the swirls in it. Say it represents insanity. The narrator is kind of crazy and is in an insane asylum while telling the story.

I think you should bring an empty bowl to school. It's much deeper than bringing in some milk shakes. I don't really think any type of "food" items symbolize anything in the book.
You almost never see Holden eating. Anyways it says in the book that Holden had to go on special diets because he never ate.
Look in the book. All he did was smoke and drink all the time. Smoking is an appetite surpressing drug. Thats why he was so skinny.
Tell your teacher the empty bowl shows Holden's disillisionment toward material things.
Be deep man.

you could bring malted milk, ham sandwiches, and rye bread! OR, you could bring nothing and say that the assignment accomplishes nothing and you will not participate in such a banal and pretentious activity. You could just sit and look at a kid's book. That would be much more Caulfieldesque. Also, get a crew cut

Wow, I thought for sure Phoebe was eating either a candy apple or candy floss on the carousel, but I just looked in my copy and I suppose I was wrong. Anything around that scene would be especially powerful as that is the (rather quietly subdued) climax to the book.
Great book, btw. Changed my life.

You could bring a rhubarb pie to represent the baseball image of a "catcher".
(BTW, it's a cute, if pointless, idea, IMHO,
and, for the record, I couldn't stand the book)

Malted milk, he drinks that in the book. Or a steak, like he eats in boarding school.

It's a short book. There are references to various foods in it. Remember them? Maybe some of those would be good to bring.
Luck--
