I am recoating a piece of furniture that I used oil based MinWax polyurethane on previously.
I finally invested in a HVLP spray gun and would like to use faster drying finish and I am thinking Varnish would be a candidate.

Can I apply varnish over oil based polyurethane ?
How about water based varnishes over oil poly ?

Thanks, Mike

If you are using a true varnish, it will take a lot longer for it to dry than a fast drying poly, water based or an oil. Before you put anything over the Minwax product it is imperative that you sand the surface and then wipe it down really well with mineral spirits. HVLP's are great when you do the right prep work and good top coats. Take a look at a product made by ZAR, called Oil modified urethane(OMU), this will give you an amazing finish with the hvlp. www.ugl.com/zar...

Use a water based sealer with water base stain, this will avoid cracking and pealing. There are many waterproof sealers for furniture on the market. The best is urathayne. It's easy to use and you can get it in several finishes, gloss, semi-gloss or flat. It's give a great finish to any piece of furniture. Any hardware store carries it. Happy sealing.
