Would the girl's parents be happy with this "friendship"? The only answer has to be "no". They would assume that the man's intentions were less than honorable. Even if that is not the case, the 34 year old man is leaving himself open to misinterpretation.
An adult can never truly be "friends" with a minor in the same way they are with another adult. One of the foundation stones of true friendship is equality. A "friendship" between an adult and a child is by it nature unequal and inappropriate.

No way. There is nothing they could possibly have in common and I would be extremely suspicious of ANY man of that age trying to initiate a 'friendship' with a young girl! If I found out about something like that I would get the police to investigate the guy

How do you know she's even 15? She could be 9 or 10 for all you know. And how and where exactly did you 'meet' her?
DID YOU EVER THINK that you could be set up by an internet police sting?
It's your life. Maybe you want to spend 2-3 years of it in the court system and 10-15 years in jail.
And all for a 'friend.'

for being friends: yes. there are many nice people that are old. I saw a 40 years old woman that is absolutely the nicest person alive and she had a myspace account. there are many teenagers that has 30 years old friends (except they met in real life, not internet).
but for sexuality: never.
is there a difference if you meet someone in the club or on myspace? predators are also in reality, not just on internet. it happens too many times when they put drugs in the drink and rape the victim.
and you never go to jail for being a friend with a teenager. even if you only meet with a girl as a friend and your relationship on the internet is friends, they still cant put you to jail cause there is no crime. otherwise half of the world would go to jail.
