If you're the right age, you might also look into Youth Hostels [hostels.com or hiusa.com].

Depending on where in the US you are visiting, you should be able to get affordable rates from Super 8 motels. They aren't anything fancy, but are normally clean and located everywhere. You can pick up a book in the lobby of the first one you go to, to map out your stays as you go. I'm not sure for a month, but daily they run $50 - $70 for a double.
