The human race is so arrogant. There is so much of this world that we don't know and will never know. How many species have been destroyed in the rain forest that we never even knew existed. We probably have killed off the cures for AIDS and cancer. People say NO but there is that arrogance again.
You received an answer where the person said they are not hiding, extinct is extinct. What about that fish - Coelacanth - that was said to have been extinct 65 million years ago, yet, lo and behold, it was found alive and is now thriving. Or the Robust Redhorse, a fish humans said were extinct but are not. They are alive and living in South Carolina. Guess we are not all that infallible.

Excellent question and an even better answer by "shadysback".
The problem we humans are facing is that if Nature decides we were a Nature's mistake 4 million years ago Nature will get rid of us without a second thought... Dinosaurs were around for 200 million so our existence must still be on probation. There were once too many dinosaurs (and too many of us already).
We have recently had a warning already.... too much promiscuity and AIDS was "invented" to put tabs and the brakes on too much promiscuity.. There comes another WARNING!... global warming. We've been thinking for 4 million years that we're indestructible and eternal. So did the dinosaurs for 200 million and they are not around anymore.

If you include insects then apparently there are thousands of creatures which have not been discovered....as for ones which were thought to be extinct.....you are right, man has not got everywhere on earth so species may still exist in some out of the way place.

What about a species that is not extinct but should be?
"Trolls don't see very well. They are as blind as a bat and can't see their own hand in front of them. Trolls hate the daylight. If they are caught in the sun, they will turn to stone. The worst thing you could ever do to a troll is be happy. They hate happiness and things that make people happy. So be careful not to be too happy, you might make a troll mad. If you do, a troll will not take kindly to you."

I think there are many new kind of species evolving, so there will be always many species that we don't know about. Since we know so little about the bottom of the ocean, some little island in the Pacific, some deep mountain ranges. We will always discover new species.

Thank you for this. Am a snake lover. There is more out there that we don't know about, it's great finding them now though. Let's just hope that when we find them we don't fekk up. A habit the human race does !

Steve Irwin would have loved this one, bless him. they say that in antartica there is a lake covered by 100 ft of ice. has been like this for thousands possibly millions of years. Some say there must be life in that lake that the human eye has never seen yet.
Would be great if they could find out.

it's estimated that the number of undiscovered species—primarily fish, fungi, insects, and microbes—ranges from ten million to more than one hundred million

And i don't think extinct species are 'hiding' from us, they are extinct, gone
