I'd Be right in the middle I'm willing to spend the money necessary to get what
my team needs and to upgrade problem positions ,but I also believe in developing homegrown talent .My 1st option is always my farm system when building a team ,because its cheaper and a lot of times it works out better to utilize your prospects instead of wasting money on in most cases aging freeagents who are on the decline. Their are rare cases when you can get a great player through freeagency that is still in their prime and if I can afford to do it I'd be a fool not to.I also believe in holding onto my good young talent and to do that you have to be willing to spend money. I'm willing to trade for great playersas long as I'm not mortgaging my future to do it. I also believe
in cutting dead . If a players production is dropping I'm gonna try and get the
most value for that player before he goes into full decline mode .The problem
with most owners is they're not willing to get rid of a aging fan favorite. My question is what's more important a great individual personality or the team.
I would much rather upset some fans by getting rid of a declining fan favorite
if it help me to improve my team and the way I see it I'd rather win multiple championships without 1 has been player than to keep him and drag the
team down. The most successful teams have a mix of young talent and young veteran leadership. You don't build dynasties by buying all of the best players available. You have to find great players within your farm system build up a young core let them develop and build around them. It may take 3 to 5 years to get become a consistent contender ,but I would rather wait 3 to 5 years and win multiple championships by buiulding a great team than to by a good team and barely make the postseason let alone win a championship.
Patience builds dynasties. Impatience may not even get you to the postseason.

George Steinbenner can only spend whatever it takes, because he owns the richest team in sports. So if I owned the Yankees or a team as rich as the Yankees, I would spend whatever it takes.

Fans spend their hard earned money to support the teams, and ALL owners should spend whatever it takes to give their fans the best team they can afford. That's why I never understood Mets' fans. For years the Mets ran the team on the cheap, recently not so much, and I never understood how you can support a team that was more concerned with the bottom line instead of trying to win.

I'd spend about twice as much money as anybody else on player development. Not just in the obvious ways of hiring more coaches and better scouts, but also paying my players a little better, getting them former big leaguers as mentors and educating them. I'd work with a college to educate my players in keeping themselves fit, have good nutrition and being smarter guys. I'd see to it that all my players lived decently while in the minors. I figure that kind of money is not really alot for a big league franchise, but if it signed one more good guy a year, kept one more guy healthy per year and got one more major league caliber player thru every year would be well worth it. I'd also try to build up a bigger base of minor league teams than anybody else. Maybe two AAA teams, three AA teams and a whole bunch of single A and rookie league teams. If my metro area supported it, I'd have my own semi-pro/ instructional league.

The kind that wouldn't bother to own an MLB team until it had some real salary caps and a better distribution of local television revenue.

Unless you own a team in a large Northeastern market, none of the media power brokers pay attention to you anyway, so owning an MLB team in a regional market is financial suicide.

You could make more money in a dozen other sports-related businesses.

It depends on what I had to work with. I would try to balance the development of youngsters and the need to provide a financially sensible alternative to other sports by not charging my fans an arm and a leg.

If I were really rich, I would be ok with a break even or slight profit team.

I would be like Bill Veeck and his son Mike--try to win, but make things entertaining for the fans.
I would hire someone like Rob Neyer as my GM--he understands sabremetrics about as well as anyone (this assumes I can't steal Bill James from the Red Sox).

I would have a thousand free tickets per game for good students, veterans, police, EMTs, groups of teachers, etc.

I would have good hot dogs sold at reasonable prices.

i for my section doubt any of those gamers would be unsigned. Like Andy Petit who wanted enormous money yet then had to fall lower back and take a pay decrease with the Yankees. The gamers i will determine not being on a team are gamers like Bonds and M. Ramirez the place they are on the think approximately their occupation the place they could evaluate retirement if the suitable grant does not come alongside. however the greater youthful gamers like Hanley Ramirez will certainly locate artwork and sign with a team.

I'd be like Steinbrenner, but not hire a retard like Cashman. If I were the GM of that team, with that payroll, I would win the World Series so many times we would all hate the Yankees even more. That idiot needs to puuuuuurge. Old, old lineup - I'd send Abreu and Damon, maybe even Matsui packin' for some youngsters. And God help us all if Clemens comes back. He shouldn't be allowed to spend half the season juicing up in retirement. But yeah, I'd spend to win. Winning makes money.

I'd turn it over to my General Manager and he or she would run it. If the team loses I'd fire my GM and hire a new one. It is my belief to develop players in the minor leagues.
