I would be extremely upset if i was a relative.
I wonder if she was of sound mind plus, how often did the family who contested the will bother with her before she died?

well the judge says that he felt the wife was the daughter the old lady never had
the family never bothered with the old maid, so how would they understand her feelings
good luck to them (the Chinese couple)

It said on the news that the old woman thought of the chinese woman as the daughter she never had.

Her husband and son died and she was described as a lonely old woman. Apparently her nephews and nieces who contested the will never visited her.

The couple she left the money to didn't just own her favourite takeaway like some headlines made out, they took her on holiday and spent weekends with her.

They aren't just claiming this bond with the old woman either - there showed photographs of them spending time together on the news.

The lawyer for the family said that they were "not doing this for their own benefit" and that they were shocked by claims that they mistreated their aunt. That sounds like rubbish to me. Whose benefit were they doing it for then?

I agree with the verdict, that the family sound like greedy, selfish money-grabbers, that the old lady was perfectly sane and left the money to the only people that she believed actually cared about her.

She knew the Man family who established a restaurant in premises rented from Bechal and her late husband, Simon. A friendship blossomed over several decades, in which the two families enjoyed Christmas Day celebrations and foreign holidays together.
When Bechal drew up her will, she had in mind that her nephews and nieces had been provided for to some extent in the will of her late brother.

That is what i would want to know, if she wasnt that close to her family i understand her leaving it to friends instead, this could be a case of distant relatives being greedy now the poor woman has died, or if they were close to her then i can understand thier upset and i too would be upset if a close relative passed away and left thier fortune to friends

Maybe that Chinese couple were great company for her in last years, and maybe she wanted to show her appreciation. The relatives could have been a bunch of gold diggers, just waiting around for her to die. If this was the case, then she got the last laugh.
But I guess no one can ever know what really happened....

Apparently the friendship dated from the 1960s when her husband was alive and continued until her death. The Chinese couple travelled from Essex (I believe) to visit regularly, bringing their children, as they were fond of her.
This was on pm tonight. It was not mentioned how often (or not) the contesting relatives visited.

I imagine that her relationships with her immediate family weren't too close.

That said, I'd be pretty incensed if my folks left everything to the guy at a local deli or dry cleaners. You'd better believe we'd be going to court over that one.

I'm not a big fan of forced heirship (as they have in the State of Louisiana), but it would make sense in a case like this.

I think she knew eactly what she was doing and fair play. If her family didnt bother with her and she had to befriend restaurant owners then what better lesson to teach the family with maximum impact. Haha - bless her and shame on that family xxxx

They should be grieving for her not trying to grab her money. Obviously they are all adults and therefore should be able to support themselves! And if you want to be left something in someones will you should be a bit bloody nicer to them when they are alive and not expect to use them as an ATM when they die!

I would be a little upset, but it was written 11 years ago, and she was of sound mind.
If I was one of those relatives I think I'd be wishing I had visited her more often and been nicer to her!
