I haven't had to use my 4x4 in a few months and I forgot to put on on every now an then since. Now I need it and it won't turn on. When I press the button it makes its clicking noised but does not actually engage and the light does not turn on. I've heard that you can try to tap the solenoid on the tranfer case to see if you can free it up. Problem is- I don't know where to look. I'm afraid of hitting somthing with a hammer that shouldn't be hit with a hammer.

You don't use a solenoid to shift into 4WD. It has a magnetic clutch. You only use a solenoid to go into low range.
The more likely cause is the sensor relays on the side of the transfer case. The solder joints on them always crack on that model and the control module won't shift it because it's getting ambiguous readings. The module comes off with a security torx bit and isn't hard to fix or replace.

Hitting is not a good idea unless you know how hard to hit, as most is made from soft alloy. follow the wires to the solenoid. safest bet would have a mechanic look at.
