Judy,
first I want to thank you for your kind and thoughtful question. Secondly, I am a veteran who was once decorated and I am still very proud of that service. I keep my medals now in a tin can in my basement - I don't display them. Lots of kids come around my place - I don't want them to think that going off to war is somehow "cool".

I am an avid reader of Military History, Politics, and other "sleeping pill" categories; however, today I made it a point to call and thank more than a handfull of veterans for their service. My work revolves around a desk in a Department that tries to make us all "safe". I am happy to see that you are one of many who are thankful for the sacrifices so many have made in the name of our being able to think and be as free as we are.

Have a wonderful day, and thank you for noticing what the date is today.

Semper Fi,
Gerry

As a military daughter (dad was a navy pilot) and wife(married for 25 years to a navy Seabee), sadly I believe that unless the life lost was a family member or loved one or unless someone has personally served in the military, no one really appreciates the sacrifice and hardships military families go through and most people are just glad it's not them serving...which is the limit of their appreciation. I would like to think I am wrong about this, but in general, I think it's true.

Though many people don't think of it this way, the fact that we are still Americans (as opposed to Germans or Japanese subjects) that are still guaranteed certain freedoms paid for with the hard work and sacrifice of our soldiers is, in itself, a form of appreciation, because we have ALL benefitted from what they did then, and what they do now, half a world away.

Do I agree with war? Not necessarily, but our soldiers are doing what they have been commanded to do, which includes upholding the principles of our democracy, and for that, they deserve nothing less than the support and respect of our entire nation.

Not really. I saw how my father was mistreated as a disabled veteran and I have seen the mistreatment of many other veterans over the years. They are treated just like the rest of the disposable citizens once they are sucked dry by the greed of the government drones and politicians.

NO! We do not do enough for our veterans, dead or alive, and their families.

I think we should give them just about everything their hearts desire. If there is anything left, we can use tax money to help the lazy among us who refuse to get work, get off of drugs, stay away from crime, etc., etc., etc.

Go Military!! God Bless You All!!

yes the american people greatly appreciate the sacrafices of all our servicemen & women. It seems our own government doesn't seem to apprecate them. if you do't agree to this then walk into any v.a. hospitol. and over 90percent of sevrice men & women families are at or below poverty level. all of ameica's citizens value our military.

I think the appreciation could be much stronger. People make everything political now a days. If it was not for them we would all be speaking a different language!
