I'm goin on a flight tuesday and I want to carry my Seagate 320gb external hdd with me but I dont have space in my carry on bag for it so im goin to put it in my suitcase. I would hate to hear that my suitcase is missing but even more I'd hate for them to have what is on the hard drive. So how can I secure it? like password lock it or something..

You can encrypt the entire drive using True Crypt:

http://www.truecrypt.org/

If you want to encrypt the entire drive, you'll have to move all of your files to another hard drive until True Crypt creates the encrypted partition. If you want to just designate a certain amount of space as an encrypted partition, you won't have to move the data unless the total size of all the data you want to hide exceeds the remaining space on the drive.

True Crypt will create the encrypted partition (it'll look like a folder to you) and you can create a key file and password for it. Without both the key and the password, the partition stays encrypted and hidden on the drive. Of course, this means you should keep the key file somewhere other than the external hard drive.

You can use TrueCrypt to encrypt the external hard drive, it's free and famous. Someone has introduced it.
Another program is also able to help you in this problem - USB security. It's also freeware, and is designed to password protect external hard drives. You can get it here: http://www.kakasoft.com/usb-security/
