Do people understand that they are sending US money/resources over to china with a big red bow on it? Are people aware of the US trade deficit? How can people pretend to love their country and then sell it out by shopping at walmart?

Think of it this way. We have more people concerned solely about themselves in the U.S. than anytime in history. They don't care.

Also, do you honestly believe that illegals care about the U.S.? Do you realize the % of the U.S. population they make up here?

I won't shop there, as much because their prices are 30% HIGHER than others like Target, or K-Mart in spite of all their BS that even Liberals who should know better believe. Actual checking the stuff most folk have to buy, rather than a few "in your face" loss leaders, would confirm this.

Of course where they have gone into small towns and killed off all the local competition making a ghost town of Main Street it is far too late to think about that, but the rest of us can boycott all the "Big Box" stores as much as still possible as I try to do.

All that about higher wages in America causing higher prices is also BS. It has been well demonstrated that the slave labor in China is like six cents on a $30.00 doll and the advertising was around $3.50. Paying 100 times as much for labor or $6.00 to make the doll, would not change the price point that it would sell at, just a portion of the profitability.

Even including all profits in China , from sweatshop owner to exporter the price was still less than $6.00. The rest is markup and profit. There is more than enough room in there for an honest wage!

And knowing that there is someone making sure the stuff is not poisonous would not be a bad thing either.

How can any of the 1.3 billions consumers here in China call themselves patriotic if they buy American made goods that the stores are full of. Lets everyone in the world be patriotic and only buy what they make themselves. Never mind that many of the components of the "Made in China" goods are actually made in America, or that millions of American jobs rely on goods imported from all over the world. Lets see how fast 95 % of American corporations go broke if trade with China stops. You are such a simple minded twit.

Why the Chinese in particular? Why WalMart in particular?

Every day, you will consume things from all over the world. It is all part of the global economy.

Buying things from other parts of the world strengthens those economies and helps them buy even more things that America is so good at making (technology, software, films etc). This then builds wealth in the US. The US is the most wealthy nation in the world by a country mile.

If the US decided to shut its doors, then the US economy would suffer badly.

The trade deficit is only one economic measure and one must focus on a bigger picture. It is in imbalance, but shutting the door on the global economy (which the US helped build in a very large part) is not the answer.

If the US had not helped build the world economy, it would not be enjoying the wealth it does today. Nowhere near it.

Funny thing: back in 1990, it was the Japanese that the Americans were venting their anger at.

Things are not that simplistic.

Interesting concept but the market is flooded. The USA is not in merchandising anymore. The companies from the USA all went to China for the slave labor. If you read Wall Street you would realize that some of the bigger names are secretly going to start having things produced in China. People does not have choices, buy what is on the market or buy nothing. People need to start raising a fit that they want companies brought back to USA soil so Americans can have jobs to.

Don't you understand that our government is so broke the Chinese are buying up our loans? We can't speak out too loudly against them as a government because they hold so much of our paper. How do you think we are financing this trillion dollar pus war? LOANS!! Many from the Chinese.
I agree that Walmart is accountable for the death of small retailers; the death of many 'Main Streets' across the U.S. and worst of many retailers are responsible for the homogenization of America's towns.
It is also true that while the rich become richer the rest of us are stuck with Walmart.. gasoline prices up, heating fuels up, food costs up. Since when is poverty, the working poor, the strangled middle class unpatriotic? Blame our government for looking the other way in trade agreements containing no oversight provisions for the crap they foist on us!

When I become the stereotypical rich Republican, I'll shop elsewhere. If you think that Walmart is the only seller of Chinese-made goods in the US, you need to think again. Take a look around your house and see if you can find out where most of those things come from.

If everyone -- everyone -- were to boycott Walmart, then reasonable alternatives to many affordable products might arise in other "local" stores. However, in many communities, Walmart is simply the most affordable place to get many items in one place, rather than drive-drive-drive to support other stores.

And, here's another point: all that driving out of one's way to boycott Walmart is simply wasting gasoline -- money which goes ultimately to economies that hate the U.S., anyway.

Trade deficit is almost meaningless in today's "world" economy. Things can't be made here any more because of the HIGH labor costs! You want to pay $25 for that new toy for your kids or $5 ? And what do you expect Billions of Chinese people to do??

What is it with people like you and your "agita" over Wal-mart?

There are Chinese made products all over. At Home Depot and Lowe's, at Sears and Target, at Best Buy and Office Max, etc, etc.

And if you question the patriotism (as if you had any standing to judge others - ha!) of anybody who buys any thing from China, what about all the other foreign products that people buy?

But the fact is that your claim doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and it is not based on any valid or logical line of reason.

I'd love to buy American goods sold by Wal-Mart. But those American goods cost MORE. Now you union folks start making goods that cost me the same as those Chinese goods sold in Wal-Mart and I'll buy them all day long!

Yes I'm aware of that trade deficit. That's because no one overseas wants to buy those American goods that cost more than the Chinese ones either. Unionize them.

How can you sell out YOUR country by making employers pay you more than you are worth? Are those Chinese workers that underpaid or are you that over paid?
