I'm traveling. My wifi detector finds plenty of hotspots, but they all show a lock - meaning I have to have a WEP key to get in.

How do I establish an internet connection if I don't know who's running the hotspot or how to get the WEP key necessary to get on their hotspot?

If they are locked, they are not probably not meant for unrestricted use. Sorry, you can always try a Starbucks.

If you are in a common travel spot like an airport or hotel, you may be able to pay a fee to get on a network. Generally, when you open the browser, the networks order screen will come up. If not, try to find out the address from a sign or staff.

These pay networks, in my experience, usually go for @ $10/day. If you do this a lot (say 5 or more days per month) it might be more cost effective to get a mobile wireless broadband account from a telco (Verizon or Sprint come to mind) this would be reliable and cost efficient in the long run.

These are not intended for car use. You need to go to the site and ask for the key. Many coffee shops and libraries have such sites. Also many of the sites you see may be private networks which are illegal to use anyway. For full mobile use you need a cellular service. You need a subscription for this.
