x = blouse
y = jeans

x + y = 38.5
y = x + 12.5

Use substitution:

x + x + 12.5 = 38.5
2x = 26
x = 13

Blouse = $13.00
Jeans = $25.50

let x = the cost of the blouse

let x + 12.50 = the cost of the jeans

so the formula looks like this: x + x + 12.50 = 38.50

combine like terms x + x = 2x

so: 2x + 12.50 = 38.50
- 12.50= -12.50
------------------------------------
2x = 26
/2=/2
------
x = 13

therefore the blouse is $13 and the Jeans are $25.50

13 + 13 + 12.50 = 38.50

blouse = x
jeans = y

y = 12.50 + x

x + y = 38.50

x + x + 12.50 = 38.50
2x + 12.50 = 38.50
2x + 12.50 - 12.50 = 38.50 - 12.50
2x = 26
(2x)/2 = 26/2
x = 13 = blouse
y = 13 + 12.50
y = 25.50 = jeans

13 + 25.50 = 38.50
38.50 = 38.50
2(13) + 12.50 = 38.50
26 + 12.50 = 38.50
38.50 = 38.50

let the blouse cost $ x..then the jean will cost x+12.5
--> x+ x+12.5 = 38.50
--> 2*x = 26.0
--> x = $ 13

So, the blouse costs $ 13 and the jeans costs $ 25.5

a + (a+12.50) = 38.50
2a+12.50=38.50
2a=38.50-12.50
2a=26.00
a=13
13 blouse+25.50jeans=38.50
